Ed Sheeran and XO Man review
I’d been having a right mare of a day. Everything seemed to be all doom and gloom with no silver linings. You know the ones? Crap news, followed by no clean socks and that last pitiful drop of milk in your tea. Everything just seemed dire.
So when I rocked up to Shoreditch House for Wired with my pals, I was kinda down in the dumps not expecting much from my mood or the night. But a crowd full of fun folk and a welcome hug from friends later and I was starting to feel a bit warmer inside.
Then Ed Sheeran started playing and everything sort of felt alright again. At first glance Ed just looks like my mates who used to kick flip down stairs when I was a kid. You don’t expect him to have this brilliant, tuneful voice and catchy self penned melodies. His red hair and shy looking face don’t make you think he’s gonna be such a good beat boxer. And his oversized Vans definitely don’t imply he’ll effortlessly mix 50 Cent’s lyrics into his rootsy soulful tunes.
Ed blends genres in a way that could only come from someone who truly loves and studies his trade.
But anyway I could rant on about how brill he was for ages – I have been to anyone close by. But that’s probably a bit boring, instead why not have a little listen? He brightened my week – so maybe he’ll lift yours too.
I don’t want to fail to mention XO Man who finished the night with a brilliant set. It wasn’t the first time I’d seen XO. That was a few months back and was a baptism of fire! He picked me out the crowd to…um, I guess ‘serenade’ would be the best word!
I was with my boyfriend at the time and I was like ‘love, why didn’t you say something?’ to which he replied ‘baby he’s like 6ft 10” – if he wanted to borrow you the whole night I would of let him!” Charming!
Anyway there’s something about XO that I just love. From the minute he enters the room you can’t take your eyes off him. And it’s not just coz he’s massive (which he undoubtedly is) it’s his brilliantly weird sense of style and equally huge personality that makes you excited for his set.
And he doesn’t disappoint – he’s funny, raw, vulgar at times but always entertaining. He seems completely at home on stage and has that over cocky swagger which could easily make you hate him but instead just makes you secretly want to be his friend.
His tunes are fun and his lyrical style interesting. He manages to make a song about being wicked in bed sing-a-long-able, and that’s no mean feat.
